The situation you described

"One of my staff keeps interrupting another in meetings. I've coached him and told him to be respectful, but he keeps doing it. What do I do?"

● Pattern: Repeated
Document

Because this has continued after coaching, it's time to move from informal coaching to a documented conversation. That creates a written record of the pattern, what was discussed, and what was agreed to, which protects you and the staff member if further steps become necessary. If it continues after this conversation, consult HR on next steps.

Say This

"I want to circle back on something we've talked about before, because I think it deserves a more focused conversation. In our last few meetings, I noticed your colleague was interrupted mid-sentence more than once, even after we've talked about this. Can you help me understand what's happening for you in those moments?"

Grounded in Respect, one of your organization's values, and built to open the conversation rather than shut it down. Valign points back to the handbook policy on professional conduct.

Behavior observed

"One of my staff members keeps interrupting another staff member in meetings. I've coached them and told them not to do that, to be respectful, but he continues to do it. What do I do?"

What may be going on
For the staff member

The staff member may be feeling pressure to prove competence, excitement about ideas, or anxiety about being heard themselves. They may not fully recognize the pattern despite prior feedback, or they may be experiencing something outside of work that is affecting their self-regulation. It is also possible the earlier coaching felt corrective without exploring the underlying why, leaving the behavior in place.

For you

You may be carrying frustration that earlier coaching did not land the way you hoped, and that is a valid feeling to notice. Before walking in, consider whether something beneath the behavior has gone unspoken, perhaps tension between the two team members, a sense of not being heard, or a communication style the staff member has not yet learned to regulate. It is worth pausing to ask whether your previous coaching named the impact clearly, or whether it focused more on the rule than the why.

Values analysis
RespectMisaligned

Interrupting a colleague repeatedly signals that their voice and contributions are not being valued in shared spaces.

CollaborationMisaligned

Meetings are a key collaborative space, and interruptions disrupt the shared dialogue and team trust needed for effective teamwork.

BelongingMisaligned

When one voice consistently overrides another, it erodes the sense of belonging and equitable participation the team depends on.

Impact
Client

When team communication breaks down, decisions about the people we serve can be made with incomplete input, which affects the quality and consistency of care.

Team

The colleague being interrupted may feel diminished, disengaged, or hesitant to contribute. Other team members may begin to lose trust in the meeting space as a place where every voice matters.

Organizational

Repeated interruptions, especially after coaching, can erode psychological safety and signal that accountability for respectful conduct is inconsistent.
